Freestyle Junkies
This dynamic duo will happily mix anything they can lay their hands on. Famous for their back-to-back four deck action, these guys will challenge and entertain anyone who's up for listening.
In the summer of 1997 the management of Alleycat Live asked two aspiring young DJs to take up their Saturday night residency.
Chris and Dave accepted and started up "Anything Goes", the night where you'd find UK Garage and House alongside Breakbeat, Techno and Trance with even the odd Drum ‘n’ Bass, Happy Hardcore and Hip Hop tune getting thrown in for good measure. The tagline on the last set of flyers read "brought to you by the resident freestyling vinyl junkies" and that line eventually got contracted and the Freestyle Vinyl Junkies were born. Chris and Dave had their first gig under their new moniker in the summer of 1998 at a Southampton University outdoor even. They followed this up with another Southampton gig later in the year spinning a massive mix of Big Beat, House, Garage, Indie, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and Anthems. A year later, they stepped up a gear with a performance at Southampton Uni's Freshers' Ball. They were booked to play a chill out room, but the crowd tempted the FVJs with some tasty requests and when Chris challenged Dave to a back-to-back battle of the DJs, all hell broke loose. Funk Junkie's "Got Funk", which Chris had nicked from Dave's record bag, kicked it all off with tunes like Run-DMC's "Walk this way", The Prodigy's "Out of Space" and Underworld's "Born Slippy" giving an idea of just how chilled out the room was! Dave was adjudjed the victor amid bitter squabling but much much fun was had by all. Wind forward a few years and the boys are mainly using CDJs now, so the "vinyl" bit is sadly departed and the Freestyle Junkies are once more looking to cause trouble wherever they may...
